The Leslie O. Fulton Fellowship provides one or two awards of $5000 annually. In 2012, there will be one award. The Fellowships are directed toward theatre artists of high merit to sustain and enhance their creative process.

These awards are made possible by a gift from Neil Fulton in honor of his late wife, Leslie, who was an active member of the Portland Civic Theatre Guild. Mrs. Fulton initiated the Portland Civic Theatre Fund through the Oregon Community Foundation as a way to continue the legacy of the Portland Civic Theatre after it closed its doors in 1993.

Fellowship applicants must be from the Portland metropolitan area in terms of official residence or professional activity. They must be active on a regular basis in Portland area theatre and be recognized as professional by their peers.

THE MARY BRAND THEATRE FOR YOUTH PROGRAM

For several years, The Mary Brand provided scholarships to Portland area theatre students ages eighteen and younger. In 2012, it was decided to change the focus of the award from individuals to programs that involved young people in theatre education as participants, observers or students. The amount of the 2012 award is set at $2000.

This award honors Mary Brand who founded the Civic Theatre Guild in 1958 as a way to assist the Portland Civic Theatre. Among the programs sustained by the activities of the Guild was the Civic Theatre School which provided training to thousands of theatre students of all ages for several decades.

When the theatre closed it’s doors in 1993, the Guild decided to continue and expand it’s support to the entire Portland theatre community and is always looking for ways to increase and improve the help we offer.
